"We expect that the first tourist flight leaving the United States will begin around 2011 and Kiruna (northern Sweden) will be around next year later, in 2012", Spacesport representative of Sweden Johanna Bergström-Roos told AFP.
The flights will take place at the Virgin Galactic, owned by British tycoon Sir Richard Branson, who in turn send the client, about 110 kilometers above Earth of New Mexico in the United States.
Virgin Galactic said on Tuesday it signed a five Nordic travel agencies that will have the right to sell tickets for the United States and Sweden launches, which is beginning to cost $ 200,000 a piece, even though prices are likely to come down over time.
"We hope Europe will Kiruna major launch pads for tourist flights," Bergström-Roos said, pointing out that the city is located about 145 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle has been home to the Esrange Space Center since 1966.
"In sub-orbital flights, which will be sent to tourists are the types of flights, we have already started to Kiruna, although today we send crewless flights is much higher, up to 800 kilometers," she said.
"We really experienced when it comes to space missions."
Kiruna is also already a magnet for adventure and wildlife tourists want to see natural phenomena as the Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun, stay on the ice of a nearby hotel or go on skis, dog sleds or snow scooter tours.
Roland Sand, a representative of the Ice Hotel which is located near Kiruna, confirmed to the Associated Press on Tuesday that the hotel will soon propose space trips for tourists to travel through the Aurora Borealis, rather than simply observing the northern lights from the ground.
"We expect that if one person in a family that comes here wants to fly into space, perhaps, other family members to register for other experiences, Bergström-Roos said.
About 300 tickets already sold for a short tourist space flights, she said, adding that while the Danes, Swedes and Finns were among the buyers, most of the existing ticket holders do not want to wait until Kiruna launch to start and choose flights from the United States.
"Most people want to be first," she said.
